You may come across fellow veterans referring to this benefit as “Unemployability” or “IU.” It’s important to note that there is no age limit to receive the Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) benefit. Typically, veterans who qualify for TDIU have a combination of mental and physical conditions that hinder their ability to perform both physical and sedentary work.
The TDIU benefit ensures veterans receive the same monthly compensation amount as those with a 100% “schedular” rating. However, it’s crucial to highlight that the Veteran’s combined rating does not necessarily have to reach 100% to qualify for TDIU.
As of December 1, 2023, the TDIU benefit amount stands at $3,737.85 per month. For veterans with spouses, dependent children, or parents, the monthly benefit amount increases accordingly.
While veterans with a 100% VA “schedular” rating face no work limitations, TDIU rating focuses on the VA’s assessment of the Veteran’s ability to find and maintain employment given their rated conditions. It also considers the percentage of work time that may be lost due to related illness, treatments, and more. Consequently, if the VA designates the Veteran as 100% unable to work under the TDIU rating, they are restricted from engaging in “substantial gainful employment.” In simpler terms, their earned annual income cannot exceed the poverty threshold.
Alternatively, veterans may earn income exceeding the poverty threshold by working in a protected work environment, such as a family business or sheltered workshop. The determination of whether a job qualifies as a protected work environment depends on the substantial accommodations provided specifically for the Veteran to continue working.
